Certified Public Accountant
I have 30+ years of industry experience, with the majority in the international field. I am fortunate to travel the country in the summer and during breaks performing specialized audits. The auditees range from Fortune 500 companies to a two-person company on a Texas Longhorn ranch. Many of the companies were founded by non-business majors. When people I am dealing with hear I teach, I usually hear three consistent comments:
- Teach them the importance of cash flow
- Teach them the importance of inventory turnover and gross margins
- I wish I had taken more accounting
I try to accomplish the first two. In addition to the fundamentals of accounting, we are able to incorporate topics from the other business courses offered at the school. Students graduating from Saint Anselm have done very well with the CPA exam and in the business world.
I hold season tickets to most Hawks sports and attend many other student activities. I am very proud of our accounting team which in December 2011 placed in the top-10 in the AICPA accounting competition. Our students finished in front of competitors from many well-known nationally-ranked schools. Tickets for an accounting match are impossible to get!
In the spring, students that take my Federal Income Taxation course usually have an opportunity to do individual tax returns. It is always nice to get an e-mail from a student that I had years ago who comes across a current topic and starts with "I remember when you talked about this..."
