ESOL Teacher candidates may major in History, English, Spanish, French, or Latin. Candidates will have coursework and clinical experiences which emphasize elementary and secondary education.
Field Service (Clinical Practice)
Saint Anselm College's Education Department requires ESOL minors to complete 5 semesters of clinical experiences. The Coordinator of Clinical Practice works with the contact person at the partnership school to match the student with a cooperating teacher who is a model of professional practices, demonstrates a positive impact on student learning, is willing to serve as a mentor, and who holds an experienced educator credential in the content area that matches the endorsement for which the student is preparing. Below are the various courses that require a field service component. Freshmen and sophomores take a core requirement with service learning at English for New Americans or study abroad.
ED 130 Principles of Teaching and Learning
Students will spend 30 hours participating in an assigned classroom. Embedded in this course is Sophomore Early Field Experience (SEFE) which requires students to work in an ESOL setting.
ED 322 Inclusion, Equity and Diversity
This course is designed to immerse students in the understanding of working with children with English language disabilities.
ED 432 Supervised Student Teaching - completed fall (Elementary) and spring (Secondary)
Students spend a minimum of 6 visits/10 hours during the semester prior to student teaching in a Bridge Experience getting acclimated to the school, classroom, and curriculum. The semester following the Bridge Experience, students will student-teach full time for 13-15 weeks.
It is highly recommended that a variety of sites are used: parochial, urban, and suburban. ESOL candidates must complete a clinical experience in an elementary, middle and high school classrooms.
