Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime on this short term study abroad program in Tanzania! A collaboration of Campus Ministry and Peace and Justice Studies, the program offers students an opportunity to travel and study in one of the most exciting and beautiful countries in Africa in the summer of 2013. Students may register for one of the two courses offered in the program: Society and Culture in Tanzania, a Sociology elective, or Peace and Justice in Tanzania, a Peace and Justice elective.

Students will register for one of the following two elective options:
Peace & Justice in Tanzania will be an introduction to the social justice challenges facing Tanzania today, including a comparison to neighboring countries to highlight Tanzania's relative political and social stability. Both Tanzania's national political history, which includes the country's relatively recent independence, and the specific needs of Dar es Salaam, the groups' base city while in country, will be explored. The course will use capitalize on site visits to several NGO's currently at work in the region to better understand the possible responses to existing justice concerns, as well as grapple with the unique role of Catholic Social Teaching in addressing potential community needs.
Society and Culture in Tanzania will examine major aspects of Tanzanian society and culture. Particular emphasis will be placed on the impact of colonialism, development, and globalization on social structure, institutions, culture, and inequality.

* Students have the opportunity to sign up for an optional safari at the end of the program. The safari will run from June 2 - 7, 2013. The cost of the safari is $770 USD.
Program Costs & Deadlines
- February 15, 2013: application and $500 deposit due
- March 15, 2013: $1883 + airfare due
- April 15, 2013: $1200 tuition due
What's Included
- Airport pick-up and drop-off in Tanzania
- On-site orientation including pertinent information on student housing, cultural issues, health and safety protocol, and local logistics.
- Dorm Style Accommodation, which includes breakfast daily.
- Co-Curricular Activities. Specific activities are being determined but could include visits to Catholic Relief Services, which have been in Tanzania since the establishment of the current state and have particular expertise with agriculture and development; CEFA, an Italian NGO offering jobs skills training to the disables; FEMA, a magazine aimed at teenagers tackling important social issues and encouraging life skills.
- Two full-day excursions, including a visit to Hanga Abbey, Tanzania's Benedictine Abbey.
