Gianpietro "John P." Mazzoleni, Ph.D. '69

Academic Achievement Award

The Academic Achievement Award recognizes an individual for his or her distinguished academic achievement, scholarship, and exemplary contributions to the field of education.  This year's recipient was Dr. Gianpietro "John P." Mazzoleni of the Class of 1969.

After graduating from Saint Anselm College with a degree in sociology, Gianpietro continued his love for learning.  In 1974, he earned his doctorate in sociology, summa cum laude, from the University of Rome, and today he is a full Professor of Sociology and Political Communication at the University of Milan.  

Prior to his current position, he served as an Associate Professor at the Universities of Salerno and Genoa, as well as a visiting scholar at universities throughout the world.  

In addition, Gianpietro has published multiple books and co-founded and edited several works related to his field of study.  He serves on numerous editorial boards including the European Journal of Communication, and in 2011, he was appointed as General Editor of the International Encyclopedia of Political Communication.

Gianpietro is his considered a leading global expert in mass communication, media policy and political communication.  An accomplished scholar and charismatic teacher, Gianpietro is highly revered by his colleagues and students for his thorough and well-rounded approach to scholarship. Beyond his prominence and influential role in the field of political communication internationally, many of his colleagues and students admire his down-to-earth and generous approach to teaching and scholarship...always with a little good humor added in.
