Ann Norton

Professor and Chair, English
Inspired by Literature
Ann Norton loves teaching Introduction to Literary Studies because it is not confined to a specific genre, time period, or country. "We look at poetry, novels and short stories formally as literary art rather than as representatives of people, periods, or places, so we can really take our time appreciating the beauty of classic works," she says. However, her specialty is the modern British novel. She is inspired by authors such as Edith Wharton and Virginia Woolf and is one of the foremost scholars on the life and works of British writer Rebecca West. Her cultural interests are wide-ranging, and her enthusiasm is contagious. Current projects include studying contemporary Irish and Canadian authors.
