David George

Professor and Chair, Classics
History on TV
Anyone who thinks study of the ancient world is dull hasn't seen David George on the History Channel, where he and other classics faculty can be seen explaining the tactics of epic battles and the habits of vanished civilizations. While those programs bring history alive through video and computer animation, George and his students also dig for history near Orvieto, Italy, where he is the director of the college's archaeological site. Students spend six weeks each summer using trowels and brushes to unearth coins, pottery, masonry and other relics from what was likely a sacred site that dates back to the Etruscans in 800 B.C.
