MLA International Bibliography
Produced by the Modern Language Association of America, this electronic index consists of bibliographic records pertaining to literature, language, linguistics, and folklore. (1963–present)

Literature Resource Center
Find biographical information on authors, as well as bibliographies, plot summaries, and literary criticism of their works. This resource also provides the full text of articles from more than 100 literary journals.    User Guide

Academic Search Premier
A broad index providing abstracts and some full-text for a range of academic areas, including modern languages.

ProQuest Central
A massive database covering a wide range of subjects, with full-text of scholarly journal articles, newspaper articles, and dissertations. To limit your searches to only those articles written in a foreign language, type your desired language in the search box and choose "Document Language" from the drop-down menu.

Culture and Civilization

Historical Abstracts
Provides abstracts to journal articles, books, and dissertations covering world history from 1450 to the present (excluding North America).

"Iter's bibliography covers all literature pertaining to the Middle Ages and Renaissance (400–1700). Citations for journal articles (1842–present), reviews, review articles, bibliographies, catalogues, abstracts and discographies are included. Also included are citations for monographs (1995–present), and material published in monographs and collections of essays."    User Guide

Handbook of Latin American Studies
"The Handbook is a bibliography on Latin America consisting of works selected and annotated by scholars. Edited by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress, the multidisciplinary Handbook alternates annually between the social sciences and the humanities...Works reviewed include books, journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers in the disciplines of Anthropology (including Archaeology, Ethnohistory and Ethnology), Art, Economics, Geography, Government and Politics, History, International Relations, Literature, Music, Philosophy, and Sociology. Find Books


Search the library catalog to locate books in Geisel Library. Search by keyword if you are unsure of the title you are looking for. Books covering language, literature, culture and civilization of France, Germany, Russia, Spain, and South and Central America are located throughout the library; works covering specific languages and literatures are located on the Upper Level in the following areas:

ARTFL Project
A collection of French-language texts "ranging from classic works of French literature to various kinds of non-fiction prose and technical writing. The eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries are about equally represented, with a smaller selection of seventeenth century texts as well as some medieval and Renaissance texts." Also included is "a Provençal database that includes 38 texts in their original spellings. Genres include novels, verse, theater, journalism, essays, correspondence, and treatises. Subjects include literary criticism, biology, history, economics, and philosophy."

Ebrary is an online library containing thousands of e-books spanning across all scholarly disciplines. Books can either be opened in QuickView for instant viewing or in the ebrary Reader (a downloadable plug-in), which provides enhanced functionality such as the ability to copy/paste, highlight, or take notes in a particular book.

Foreign Language Newspapers

LexisNexis Academic
To search for full-text newspaper articles from international papers, use the Select Sources drop-down box to choose "Non-US Newspapers and Wires." Foreign-language publications are also available. Next to Select Sources, choose "Non-English Language News, World Library." For publications in specific languages, choose one of the language-specific source categories, such as "Toute la Presse - Francais" or "Spanish Language News, Combined." Click on the small blue "i" icon to view a list of titles in each category.
