Manchester, N.H. (March 31) -- The Saint Anselm men's lacrosse team dropped its fourth straight game with a 12-11 overtime loss to Assumption on Saturday afternoon in the home opener for the Hawks at Grappone Stadium.
Assumption got off to a quick start and jumped out to a 3-0 lead just 4:05 into the first quarter. Saint Anselm struck back though when junior Mike McClain (Milton, Mass.) notched the first of his four goals to put the Hawks on the board. After Assumption led 4-2 after one quarter, the Hawks evened the score at 4-4 heading into halftime with goals from Ryan McDonald (Bow, N.H.) and Chris Murphy (Winchester, Mass.) in the second quarter. The teams battled back and forth throughout the third as the Hawks held an 8-7 advantage on a goal by Steve Trocki (Braintree, Mass.). Saint Anselm came out firing in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter and surged to an 11-9 lead on an even-strength goal by Murphy with 6:27 remaining. The Greyhounds took advantage of a pair of Saint Anselm penalties though with man-up scores by Peter Reynolds and Kevin Klaskin to send the game into overtime. With just 40 seconds elapsed in the extra period, Mike Molk scored to send the Greyhounds to their second-straight overtime victory.
Chris Bird turned aside 14 Saint Anselm shots to pick up the win, while Saint Anselm goalie Andrew Roy (Westford, Mass.) made 10 saves in the loss. The loss was the second-straight overtime defeat for the Hawks, who entered the game as the highest-scoring team in the Northeast-10 at 11.00 goals per game.
McClain led the Hawks with four goals and one assist, while Matt O'Connell (Charlestown, Mass.) tallied four assists in the defeat. Kyle MacKay led Assumption with a hat trick as seven different players found the back of the net for the visitors.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the Northeast-10, while Assumption improves to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the NE-10. Saint Anselm is back in action on Saturday, April 7th when the Hawks travel to Le Moyne for a league game beginning at 2 p.m. in Syracuse, N.Y.
