More than 750 alumni, family and friends returned to campus for Homecoming Weekend Friday, Oct. 18 to Sunday, Oct. 20. From the inauguration of Saint Anselm College's 10th president, Dr. Steven DiSalvo on Friday, to the annual football game and Alumni Awards Dinner on Saturday, the weekend was one of the most well attended Homecomings in college history.
The weekend began on a celebratory note as the entire college community joined by alumni, trustees, and friends took part in the installation of the college's 10th president Dr.Steven R. DiSalvo. See and read inauguration coverage.
Saturday morning began with the second annual Bob Collins 5k run/walk around campus where siblings Anthony '08 and Tessa '12 Vercollone took top prize as first male and female runners.
On a more somber note, many members of the class of 2012 as well as other alumni and students, faculty and staff took a moment on Saturday afternoon to remember and pray for Daniel Breen '12, who passed away on Oct. 12. Father Anselm Smedile, O.S.B., led the group in a prayer. Dr. DiSalvo asked the group to look to their faith to carry them through this difficult time as he read an email he received from Daniel Breen's father. Dr. DiSalvo also quoted Fr. Anselm's homily from the funeral Mass in response to how to cope with the death of someone so young by remembering the words of Pope Francis, "Quiet, quiet."
After lunch, faculty, staff, and students joined alumni and parents at Grappone Stadium to cheer on the football team as the Hawks took on Merrimack College. Junior wide receiver Justin Bernard caught nine passes, including one for a touchdown, but the Hawk's suffered a 51-9 homecoming loss despite the crowd's enthusiasm. Read the full story.
Saint Anselm sophomore Jessica Avelar, a national champion twirler, performed before the game, while the college Dance Team performed during halftime.
Throughout the day, alumni also enjoyed tailgating and food and drink in the picnic grove, skating in the Sullivan Arena, and touring campus by trolley.
