Saint Anselm College celebrates a historic event this month: the installation of a new president on October 18. Dr. Steven R. DiSalvo is the college's tenth president and its first lay president in its nearly 125 years. Because the position of president has been held by monks throughout its history, the college has never before held an inauguration ceremony.
It will be a busy, exciting weekend on campus, since inauguration coincides with Homecoming Weekend. Preparations are in full swing, involving almost every aspect of the campus. Even the Alumni Hall ivy has had a haircut.
Inaugural weekend events begin on October 16 with an academic symposium featuring presentations on the history and the future of the liberal arts. The senior class will join Dr. DiSalvo that night at the Pub. The college's trustees will gather on campus October 17.
On Friday, October 18, the installation ceremony will begin at 3:30, following Mass at the Saint Anselm Abbey Church. It begins with an academic procession including the Saint Anselm faculty and delegates from 35 colleges. Alumni, trustees, state officials, Bishop Peter Libasci, and other dignitaries, will also attend. Charles M. Pollard, chair of the Saint Anselm College Board of Trustees, will confer the office of president upon Dr. DiSalvo.
About 200 students will be involved in the inauguration as greeters, escorts, and information booth volunteers.
Students will celebrate with their new president at an inaugural ball scheduled for 9 p.m. on the night of the ceremony. SGA and CAB organized the event, which includes a toast, photo opportunities, music, and dancing.
