RN to BSN program celebrates award recipient and 2017 graduatesOn Monday, May 8, Saint Anselm College's RN to BSN Degree Program recognized graduating nurse, Lisa Murphy '17, for her hard work, dedication and academic excellence, with the 2017 Dr. Sharon George RN to BSN Achievement Award.

The award, named after the nursing department's former dean, Dr. Sharon R. George, is given to the student who earned the highest GPA of the graduating class. The RN to BSN Degree Program was a direct result of Dr. George's passion and efforts to make the pursuit of a bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) accessible for the working nurse. Through Saint Anselm College's program, registered nurses (RN) with an associate's degree may earn a bachelor's in as little as 15 months.

"Our recipient has balanced the challenges of work and family commitments with academics," said program director Sue Kinney. "Tonight's recipient began her journey in 2014. We are very proud to present this award."

"I am honored," said Murphy on receiving the surprising news. "I was proud to simply make it through with a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree from Saint Anselm College, but to be honored for my academic achievements is a confidence builder and quite humbling."

Murphy is a registered nurse from Shirley, Mass. She has worked on the oncology/hematology floor at Lahey Hospital in Burlington, Mass. for almost 20 years.

The awards event in the President's Dining Room celebrated the accomplishments of Murphy and her twelve fellow student-nurses who will graduate on May 20 with their Bachelor of Science in nursing degree.

Kinney opened the evening by congratulating the graduating cohort on their hard work, reminding them of the significance of their accomplishment. "I am humbled by your stories and struggles, and awed by your perseverance and successes," she said. "I believe it takes a special nurse and student to seek out a program with high academic standards and rigor, like Saint Anselm College."

"Your achievement here is more than a diploma," Kinney added. "Saint Anselm College encourages a lifelong pursuit of the truth and fosters intellectual, moral, and spiritual growth to sustain and enrich its graduates in their careers and personal lives; again, I say well done!"

Saint Anselm College's RN to BSN Degree Program is a hybrid-online program giving nurses the flexibility to take their courses online while attending an on-campus class twice each course. The students meet and develop personal relationships with their professors, classmates, and an advisor who is committed to their success.

In the last seven years, the RN to BSN program has enrolled more than 100 nurses; 54 will have graduated as of May 20, 2017. Saint Anselm College's nursing program is highly regarded and well-respected; a program known for its rigor, through it student nurses gain confidence, and grow both academically and personally.
