History 251 (Hi 42) U.S. History from 1877

Class Meeting Time: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 12:30PM-1:20PM

Description of the Course: The goal of this course is to engage you in the issues and approaches to American History since 1877. The content of the course covers the period from the Gilded Age to the present. The course should develop an appreciation of the complex political, economic, social and cultural heritage of the United States. We will make use of documents and other readings to investigate various issues. The course will have three parts: Part I: 1877 -1916 covering Reconstruction, the American West, Gilded Age, Immigration and Labor issues, American and an imperial power and the Progressive Era. Part II: World War I, Roaring Twenties, Crash of 1929, FDR and the New Deal, World War II and the US. Part III: The Cold War, Vietnam, Civil Rights, the Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon years and recent developments in United States History.
