Description
of the Course: This course will survey the history of this great Central
European empire from its late medieval origins to its collapse at the end of
World War I. Emphasis will be on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Major
themes include the development of the unified state in the reforms of the eighteenth
century, the empire in the age of Enlightenment, conflict between nationalities
in the nineteenth century, and the disintegration of the multinational state
in World War I.
