Description of the Course: This course provides an introduction to the history of the lands that would eventually become the United States of America. It begins with a study of the native cultures which were here prior to the European invasion/colonization. It then examines the Spanish, French, Dutch, and English attempts to colonize North America, and the political, economic, social and cultural developments of the colonial period (witchcraft, slavery, international relations, material culture). The course focuses on the interactions among the European, Native American and African residents of North America and the foundation they created for later American society.
