Description of the Course: This course surveys China from the decline of the Qing dynasty to the present. The course examines late Imperial China (1750-1911), Republican China (1912-1949), and the People's Republic of China (1949-present) to understand the paradox of Chinese growth without development, China's response to the challenges of the West and Japan, and the constant struggle of China to modernize.
