of the Course: The course is a general survey of the Middle East from the
time of Muhammad to the present. In this broad span of time, the region witnessed,
among other things, the emergence of the Islamic religion, the establishment
of the great Muslim empires in the Middle Ages, a long-term rivalry with the
Christian states of Europe, colonization by the Western powers, and the establishment
of independent states in the twentieth century.
