King Henry VIII History 230: The Roots of England

Food for Thought

Week 7 (October 7-13)

On Monday, I will deliver a lecture. On Friday, we will have a student-led discussion. And of course, on Wednesday, you will take a midterm. Consequently, there's no food for thought this week.

I will provide, however, some advice for the midterm. As you study, think about the following issues:

1) Consider the various kings—real and mythical—we have studied closely so far this semester. How do they differ? How did their priorities, ideals, characters, and values differ? How do these differences reflect the different priorities of the societies they led?

2) Was 1066 an important year in England? Why? Did it constitute a fundamental turning point in English history?

3) How did the role and objectives of the English church change between the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons in the seventh century and the end of the Angevin dynasty?
