Over the course of the semester, you will have to view these movies and write a short homework assignment on each. I have included descriptions of both films for your benefit. (The descriptions are derived from VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever 2001: The Complete Guide to Movies on Videocasette, DVD, and Laserdisc.)
Glory
(Thursday, April 4, 6PM, Wyatt 109)
A rich, historical spectacle chronicling the 54th Massachusetts, the first black volunteer infantry unit in the Civil War. The film manages to artfully focus on both the 54th and their white commander, Robert Gould Shaw. Based on Shaw's letters, the film uses thousands of accurately costumed "living historians" (re-enactors) as extras in this panoramic production. A haunting, bittersweet musical score pervades what finally becomes an anti-war statement. Stunning performances throughout, with exceptional work from Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington.
Released in 1989. Starring: Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes.

Gone
with the Wind (Thursday, April 25, 6PM, Wyatt 109)
Epic Civil War drama focuses on the life of petulant Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara. Starting with her idyllic lifestyle on a sprawling plantation, the film traces her survival through the tragic history of the South during the Civil War and Reconstruction, and her tangled love affairs with Ashley Wilkes and Rhett Butler. Classic Hollywood doesn't get any better than this; one great scene after another, equally effective in intimate drama and sweeping spectacle. The train depot scene, one of the more technically adroit shots in movie history, involved hundreds of extras and dummies, and much of the MGM lot was razed to simulate the burning of Atlanta. Based on the best-selling Margaret Mitchell novel.
Released in 1939. Starring: Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Leslie Howard, Olivia de Havilland, Thomas Mitchell, Hattie McDaniel, Butterfly McQueen,, Evelyn Keyes, Ona Munson, Ward Bond, George Reeves, Ann Rutherford.
