Course Themes

The period between 1851 and 1867 constituted the high noon of Victorian England, an era when Britain enjoyed unprecedented stability and prosperity. Beneath the equipoise of these years, however, great changes took place, and Mid-Victorians attempted to deal with what they saw as the transition from the medieval to the modern world. This course identifies several areas in which significant change occurred, such as politics, art, and religion and others. Within the selected areas, students will learn to appreciate the great literature of the period and examine the historical forces influencing the art, culture and people of the mid-Victorian period.
