Essay Assignments (30%)

During the semester, we will provide more information about these assignments.

  • First Paper Assignment (due Friday, October 24) (10%): This assignment will ask you to compare two readings from the first three units.
  • Second Paper Assignment (due Wednesday, December 3) (20%): This will be a longer paper due at the end of the semester.
  • Honors Assignment (due Monday, December 15): This assignment is exclusively for the Honors students enrolled in this class who wish to receive Honors credit for the course. If you are not an Honors student, you do not need to write this essay.

Before turning in your essays (and preferably before you start working on your essays), be sure to read carefully the sections of this website on How to Cite Sources, Tips for Success on Essays, Academic Honesty, and Grading Criteria.

Late Paper Option (LPO) : For one written assignment in this course, you may use the Late Paper Option, which allows you to turn in the assignment two days later. So, for an essay due on a Monday, the LPO allows you to turn it in on Wednesday. For an essay due on a Friday, the LPO allows you to turn the paper in on the following Monday. Each assignment provided to you will list a due date and a LPO due date. You may use the LPO only once. The LPO does not allow you to turn the paper in later than the official LPO date. No other extensions will ever apply. The LPO does not apply to quizzes, the midterm or the final, of course.

Turning in Papers: We will not accept papers submitted by e-mail. You must give the paper to us in person on the day it is due—before we leave campus.
