Week 3: Wednesday, February 1

Alexander the Great (356 BC-323 BC) from a mosaic in Pompeii.
1) What appears to have accounted for the success of the Macedonian armies under Philip and Alexander?
2) How did Alexander go about conducting his battles? What characteristics did he manifest in preparing and fighting his battles?
3) Alexander did not earn the title of "great" just because he conquered almost all of the known world. In other words, his greatness was not merely about what he did, but how he did it. (Buzz Lightyear, if you remember, does not merely fall, he falls "with style.") Name at least five admirable character traits that Alexander manifested in Plutarch's account.
4) In what ways did Alexander attempt to assimilate Greek and Persian traditions and practices?
5) In certain areas of his biography, Plutarch intimates that Alexander was taking a turn for the worse. How and why did Alexander begin to take this turn?
