Food for Thought

Week 15: Monday, May 1

The Wave of the Future: The Tactical Command and Control System (TCCS) for the Fennek Wheeled Armed Reconnaissance Vehicle: The Fennek, an armored four-wheel drive reconnaisance vehicle co-produced by Germany and the Netherlands,, is integrated into a larger information technology network by means of this TCCS. Not only does the TCCS reveal to the crew members information concerning their current location as well as that of all other units in the area, it also plugs them into an extensive command and control system.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Remember that I will be showing Black Hawk Down in Gadbois 4 at 7:30 PM on Sunday, April 30.

Today, we will make it very simple.

1) According to Cassidy, why do great powers fight small wars badly?

2) According to Davis, what is at the heart of the information-based revolution in military affairs? What will this information technology allow us to do that we couldn't do before?

Other Questions

1) What does the movie Black Hawk Down seem to say about the issues above?

Mogadishu, August 15, 2001: This satellite shot shows the area in which many of the events associated with Black Hawk Down took place. Intelligence such as this is the hard currency of the information technology age. But will information technology reduce the friction of war? Is it the answer or even an answer to the problems associated with "modern war"
