Midterm Review

Week 11: Tuesday, April 6

On the midterm, I will provide you with four of the following short essay questions and two of the following long essay questions. You will have to answer two short essay questions and one long essay question.

Short Essays

1) Why did guerrilla warfare assume such prominence during the era of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars?

2) How did industrialization begin to change the face of warfare during the 19th century?

3) What exactly is nationalism? What did states do to foster national feeling in the second half of the nineteenth century, and why did they seek to foster this feeling?

4) Why were the American Civil War and the German wars of unification so important for military history?

5) What were the pre-requisites of military power by 1900? In other words, what did a country need to have by that point to become a great power capable of competing with other great powers militarily?

6) Why was the advent of Marxism important for warfare?

Long Essays

1) The battle of Waterloo occurred exactly 400 years after the battle of Agincourt. What major developments had occurred in war, society, and politics between 1415 and 1815 that made these battles so different? (Remember, I am not asking about everything that happened between these two battles, I am only asking about the things that made the battles different.)

2) In what way did the social, political, economic, and military developments of the nineteenth century prepare Europe to fight incredibly destructive wars in the twentieth?

3) What exactly are the advantages and disadvantages of waging a guerrilla, people's, or small war? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the types of forces associated with this kind of warfare? To what extent can it achieve political objectives set forth by its leadership?
