The Narmer Palette
from Hierakonpolish, Side 1, 3000 BC
The
Egyptians used palettes to mix eye paint, but this stylized palette of
schist appears to have served as a ritual object. Both this side and the
other represent an early account of Egypt's unification. This early piece
displays many of the stylistic conventions that would dominate Egyptian
artwork for centuries.
