The Scribe ("Kai"?),
ca. 2400 BC
Some
archeologists believe this statue represents Kai, a court scribe who eventually
became viziera position analogous to prime minister under the Pharaohs.
This man was not merely a secretary or "administrative assistant."
In a society where few could read or write, scribes like Kai obtained
high administrative or priestly office. Archeologists found this piece
in a tomb located at Saqqara. Consisting of painted limestone, this figure
is 21 inches tall.
