The
doge served as the chief executive of the Venetian Republic. In this portrait,
Bellini portrayed Loredan in the robes of office. In an interesting move,
Bellini inserted a wooden ledge between the viewer and the doge. Upon
the ledge, the artist has placed a small piece of paper with his name.
