Dying Warrior, Temple of Aphaia, Aegina, Greece (490 BC)

This piece constitutes part of a group intended for the east pediment of the Temple of Aphaia in Aegina. Greeks and Trojans fight as the goddess Athena surveys the battlefield. With the helmet and shield of a hoplite (the heavy infantryman of the classical Greek world), this elegant statue represents a dying warrior.
