Food for Thought Reading Assignment

Week 10: Thursday, November 7

In class, we will hold Ganelon's trial—employing methods somewhat more modern than those presented in the Song of Roland. As you read, pay close attention to Ganelon's actions and any evidence that would influence his case. Some of you will act as prosecutors, others as defense attorneys, still others as witnesses. I will give you your assigned role in class.

Please answer two of the following questions:

1) In what manner does the Song of Roland portray Muslims? Why does it portray Muslims as it does? As you think about this question, pay attention not only to the descriptions of Muslims, but their actions as well.

2) Why does the Song of Roland consider Roland a hero?

3) Why does the Song of Roland consider Charlemagne a great man?

4) In what way does the Song of Roland present a curious blend of Christianity and pagan German values? As you consider this question, think about what Christ would have to say about this story.
