The properties of atoms and molecules are explored and spectroscopy is presented as a tool for probing the properties of individual molecules. Statistical mechanics is introduced as a bridge between the microscopic quantum view and the macroscopic thermodynamic view. Three hours of lecture and four hours of laboratory each week. Five credits. Prerequisite: Chemistry 280; Pre- or Co-requisites: Classical Physics 132 or permission of the instructor Departments Offering this Course: Chemistry
