  • Discover the diversity of occupational choices available
  • Earn academic credit
  • Develop specific knowledge and skills
  • Apply the academic classroom knowledge in a real-world work setting
  • Define future career path decisions
  • Meet and learn from top professionals

Students participate in the 12 or 15-week program and work at their placement site 4 1/2 days a week. Students are required to take a class one day a week. Classes take a closer look at a specific issue or develop a particular skill. The program is enhanced with The Washington Forum--a variety of lectures, congressional breakfasts, White House briefings, tours, site visits, workshops, and information sessions. The Forum is designed to link together for the students their substantive learning, professional development and sense of civic responsibility to the people, places, and politics of Washington, D.C. Students are also required to keep a journal of their experiences and put together a portfolio of their internship at the end of the program.

The Fund for American Studies and Georgetown University
This program combines two courses for academic credit with internships, site briefings and a series of lectures by prominent policy experts. The program includes (1) The Engalitcheff Institute of Comparative Political and Economic Systems; (2) The Institute on Political Journalism; and (3) The Bryce Harlow Institute on Business and Government Affairs.

Courses are designed to give students an understanding of government, economics, and ethics, but the approach and material vary according to the Institute. Internships complement each of the Institutes' educational goals by providing practical work experience in such places as Congress, public policy organizations, magazines, TV and radio stations, trade and business associations, and consulting firms. Site Briefings expose students to people and places such as the White House, the State Department, the Federal Reserve and various embassies. Guest lectures and panel discussions by prominent national and international figures allow for students to meet and question experts in their respective field.

This program is offered in the summer only. The program consists of approximately 30+ hours of internship work, and enrollment in two courses offered through the institutes. Students participation in this program is for seven weeks only. Students earn credit for two academic courses and for their internship experience, they earn credit for one course.
