The education department now offers an English speakers of other languages (ESOL) certification program for students interested in language, cultures, social sciences, teaching in inner city elementary, middle, or secondary schools.
The state certification allows Saint Anselm students and graduates to teach English to students whose first language is not English in elementary, middle, and secondary schools.
Saint Anselm is the only college or university in N.H. to offer an ESOL program (that leads to certification) at the undergraduate level (as of 10/1/2009).
Candidates for ESOL Certification
Candidates major in English, history, Spanish, French, or Latin and will be highly qualified (HQ) to teach K-12 in their subject matter.
Graduates of Saint Anselm College's ESOL program can return and, in only one additional semester, earn their content certification. These returning students take additional methods of teaching courses in their subject area and a second student teaching placement.
Requirements to Receive State Certification
- Four field placements: elementary, middle, secondary, and either service learning at English for New Americans (ENA)* or a semester studying abroad
- Sophomore early field experience (SEFE)
- Intro to Special Ed service learning in junior year
- Student teaching
- Core required course with service learning at English for New Americans (ENA) or a semester studying abroad
Students are also required to complete the core curriculum, the requirements of their major, education courses and ESOL courses. They also take PRAXIS I and II before they start student teaching their senior year. This gives our students an advantage in that upon graduation, they are immediately ready to teach.
