Guidelines for Excellence in Education, Nursing Practice, and Mentorship Awards
I. Purpose
The purpose of these awards is to recognize outstanding nurses whose contributions to nursing fulfill the goals of Sigma Theta Tau International. Nominations are invited to recognize nurses who demonstrate excellence in one of the following 3 areas: Education, Nursing Practice, or Mentorship.
II. Criteria
A. General
- A member of Sigma Theta Tau (for most of the awards)
- GPA (when students are involved)
- Peer/faculty recognition
- Endorsement and support from nursing and/or community leaders (if appropriate)
- Types of Awards and Criteria
- Award for Excellence in Education
- Demonstrates excellence in teaching.
- Advances the science of nursing through clarifying, refining and/or expanding the knowledge base of nursing.
- Promotes a theory/research base for nursing curricula and nursing practice.
- Influences scholarly development in nursing education, practice, and/or research through teaching.
- Influences the professional practice of nursing and the public’s image or nursing through excellence in teaching.
- Award for Excellence in Nursing Practice
- Demonstrates breadth of knowledge in area of clinical nursing practice.
- Develops creative approaches to nursing practice that contribute to quality client care.
- Possesses clinical expertise and attributes of a clinical scholar.
- Advances the scope and practice of nursing.
- Serves as mentor/preceptor that inspires peer’s practice of nursing.
- Enhances the image of nursing through nursing practice.
- Participates in community affairs, legislation, or organizations that affect nursing practice.
- Award for Mentorship
- Actively shapes and promotes the career of a nurse or the development of a chapter.
- Freely shares our own resources for the growth and development of the individual or the chapter.
- Maintains the mentoring relationship over time.
III. Nominations
- Nominations are invited from any active member of the chapter. Download Award Form here.
2. Nominations are due November 15th 2007. Please send to: Awards Committee Chairperson, Epsilon Tau Chapter, Saint Anselm College, Box 1745, 100 Saint Anselm Drive, Manchester, NH, 03102.
3. Letter from nominee agreeing to be nominated accompanies nomination (optional).
4. A standard application is available. Application, CV, & references are due by January 15th 2008.
IV. Selection – (Awards Committee)
1. The selection committee consists of three appointed chapter members: the Awards Committee Chairperson, the chapter Vice-President, and the chapter Treasurer.
2. The selection committee will review nominations and recommend award recipients to the Executive Committee by February 15th for vote by the Executive Committee.
V. Notification
Candidates will receive a letter from the chapter president or appointed representative informing them of the Executive Committee’s decision.
VI. Presentation
Presentation of awards will occur at a spring meeting.
EPSILON TAU - RUTH E. BAGLEY SCHOLARSHIP
The Awards Committee of Epsilon Tau Chapter is seeking applicants for the Ruth E. Bagley Scholarship Awards.
Background: This fund has been set up in memory of Ruth E. Bagley, Professor of Nursing and founding Director of the Nursing Department, Saint Anselm College.
Purpose of this Fund: The purpose of the scholarship fund is to recognize outstanding scholarship by qualified nurses and/or nursing students to advance knowledge of nursing science and practice. The fund provides monies for awarding scholarships to qualified individuals.
A. Applicant Criteria:
1. A generic junior or senior student enrolled in the baccalaureate program in nursing at Saint Anselm College who is a present or potential member of Epsilon Tau Chapter.
2. A registered nurse who is a member of Epsilon Tau who is pursuing or about to pursue graduate study in nursing.
B. Application
1. Submit an application and a written statement of personal and professional goals in nursing.
2. Signed formal agreement for money usage.
3. Attachments:
a. Transcript of undergraduate records and/or graduate work completed
b. Two letters of recommendation (from nursing faculty members and/or immediate supervisor)
c. Vitae
C. Competitive Basis for Fund Allocation
1. High academic achievement
2. Quality of written goals
3. Contribution or potential contribution to nursing and public benefit
4. Content of letters of recommendation
5. Priority to those who have not received a previous scholarship from this source
6. Scholarship Fund Budget and number of proposals submitted
The amount of a scholarship will be determined by amount of funds requested, number of requests, and available monies in the scholarship fund for that year.
Awards Committee
The awards committee consists of three of more appointed chapter members.
Scholarship Application Deadlines
Scholarship application deadline is February 15th, 2008. Awards will be announced and/or presented at the spring meeting.
