Dr. Max Latona specializes in ancient Greek philosophy, particularly the philosophies of the Presocratics, Socrates, and Plato. He completed his doctoral work at Boston College in 2001, and joined the Philosophy Department at Saint Anselm College in the autumn of that same year. Dr. Latona teaches courses in ancient thought (including Ancient Philosophy, Great Books Seminar: Greek, and Senior Seminar on Aristotle), a course in Indian Philosophy, as well as a regular course in Ethics.
Dr. Latona's research interests include the origins of Greek philosophy as well as comparative analysis of ancient Indian and Greek philosophies. In addition, he has published several papers on a variety of ethical, metaphysical and epistemological topics, including human cloning, the nature of selfhood, and the role of myth in philosophical thought. His argument against human cloning won the American Catholic Philosophical Association's Young Scholar Award in 2004.
Aside from teaching and research, Dr. Latona enjoys working with students outside of the classroom. Among other things, he is a co-founder of the college's Philosophy/History Movie Discussion Series, has organized the Philosophy Department's Open-house and annual Softball Game/Barbecue, and has been active in assisting the students in running the Philosophy Club, Great Books Club, African American Culture Club, and lunch-time indoor soccer league.
