Kevin Cherry, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Kevin M. Cherry joined the Department of Politics at Saint Anselm College after completing his Ph. D. in political science at the University of Notre Dame in 2008. At Notre Dame, his studies focused on ancient and American political thought, as well as Christianity and politics. His dissertation, “Aristotle’s First Critique: The Eleatic Stranger and the Politics,” argued that Aristotle’s Politics is a reply to the political theory articulated in Plato’s Statesman and was nominated for the prize given to the best dissertation in political theory by the American Political Science Association.
At Notre Dame, Kevin taught classes on political faction and contemporary Christian political thought, and he also served as a teaching assistant for several courses, including “Theories of War and Peace” and “Presidential Leadership.” Prior to earning his Ph. D. and M.A. in political science at Notre Dame, Kevin earned an M.A. from the School of Philosophy at The Catholic University of America, where he also earned his B.A., majoring in politics and philosophy. He received the James K. Dornan Award as the Outstanding Senior in Politics.
A précis of his dissertation appeared in the American Journal of Political Science (January 2008), and an earlier article, co-authored with one of his graduate school mentors, appeared in History of Political Thought (Winter 2006). Book reviews have appeared in the Review of Politics and Interpretation. His current research focuses on Aristotle’s arguments about politics and nature, the nature of the Aristotelian “mixed regime,” and the character and acquisition of political knowledge.
He is a member of the American Political Science Association, the Midwest Political Science Association, the Northeast Political Science Association, and the Society for Greek Political Thought.
Kevin was born and raised on Long Island, New York, where his parents, Brenda and Peter, still live. He and his wife Lindzie were married in August, 2006, and they are eagerly awaiting the birth of their first child in March of 2009.
