Paul Christopher Manuel
Professor and Executive Director of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics
Paul Christopher Manuel is Professor of Politics at Saint Anselm College, where he chairs the Department of Politics and also serves as the Academic Research Director of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics. He has a B.A. in political science, Summa Cum Laude, from Boston University, a M.A. in International Relations from Boston University, a M.T.S. in religion and politics from the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a Ph.D. in Comparative Politics from Georgetown University.
He writes on religion, politics and democratization, with a regional specialization on West Europe. He has authored, or co-authored, five books and numerous articles. Manuel is a member of the National Screening Panel for the US Graduate Fulbright Competition for the Spain and Portugal program and a Faculty Affiliate at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard University, where he co-chaired the Iberian Studies Group for six years. He is particularly well grounded in the histories, languages, and cultures of West Europe. In addition to his area specialization in Iberia, he has traveled and studied throughout West Europe, including stays at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris, the Goethe Institute in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany and at Campion Hall, Oxford University. In 1999, he co-taught a course entitled “The French Roots of American Democracy” at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Aix-en-Provence, France.
He holds dual American and European (Portuguese) citizenship, speaks fluent French and Portuguese, and can read Spanish, Italian and some German. Manuel was elected to a two-year term on the executive board of the New England Political Science Association in 2006.
In January 2004, Dr. Manuel appeared on the cover of the Portuguese magazine "Mundo Portugues" and was its featured interview. The editors of the magazine celebrated Dr. Manuel's many academic achievements in developing and expanding the academic program in politics at Saint Anselm College, as co-Founder of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics, and as co-Chair of the Iberian Study Group at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard University. The article also noted that his many peer-reviewed books and articles have made significant contributions to the scholarly literature on Iberian politics. The overall aim of this interview is to show how this grandson of Portuguese immigrants is making a positive contribution to American society.
