American Association of University Professors (AAUP)
In 1915, two philosophers at Johns Hopkins University, Arthur O. Lovejoy and John Dewey, organized a meeting to ensure academic freedom for faculty members. This meeting was in response to the firing of economist Edward Ross at Stanford University who lost his job over his views of immigrant labor and railroad monopolies. This initial meeting at Johns Hopkins gave birth to the American Association of University Professors or AAUP.
The AAUP is the leading organization in the United States engaged in the protection of academic freedom. There is a chapter of the AAUP at Saint Anselm College. This Web site provides some information about the Saint Anselm chapter, current officers and members, and links to the national organization. We encourage faculty to join and support the mission of the AAUP.
