Faculty Roles and Responsibilities

  • Keep regular office hours and be available for student appointments. Be available to listen to student concerns and questions regarding academic issues.
  • Correctly interpret degree and major requirements, including those regarding the Core curriculum.  Evaluate student's progress toward the completion of his/her degree.
  • Help the student examine the course offerings in his/her major and/or intended major. 
  • Provide accurate and up to date information about College regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Contact and meet with students at least once each semester for pre-registration.
    • Acquaint advisees who have received a mid-semester deficiency with the options available to them.
  • Maintain confidentiality, and be knowledgeable of the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Refer students to other resources when appropriate.
    • The advisor should have knowledge of the resources available to students in the College in order to make appropriate suggestions and referrals to meet students' needs and interests. 
  • Know your advisees. Be familiar with a student's interests, goals, and capabilities; assist them in developing an academic plan and/or in considering courses which can enrich them. 
  • Maintain a file on each advisee in order to monitor progress.  Document accurate advising records and meeting notes.  Date your notes.

Student Roles Responsibilities

  • Make regular appointments to meet with advisor and seek help when needed.  Seek academic and career information needed to meet educational goals.  Keep advising appointments and be punctual.
  • Discuss personal values, abilities, interests, and goals with advisor.
  • Become knowledgeable about the relevant policies, procedures, and rules of the College as listed in the Saint Anselm College Catalogue.  Understand academic Standards of Performance, including academic warning, academic probation, and dismissal. Ask questions if a policy or procedure is not understood.
  • Acquire information needed to assume final responsibility for meeting the requirements for their degree, including the Core curriculum.  Accept final responsibility for all decisions and academic choices.
  • Gather all relevant decision-making information before appointments.
  • Take the initiative to learn about and make use of the available College resources.
  • Inform advisor or the Dean's Office of any changes in schedule, academic problems, or change of major.
