The following general guidelines, adopted by the Dean in consultation with the Curriculum Committee, are to be followed by Departments in submitting Internship proposals.

INTERNSHIP POLICY STATEMENT

PART A

The following general guidelines, adopted by the Dean in consultation with the Curriculum Committee, are followed by departments in submitting Internship proposals.

I. The Philosophy of the Program

The department is to state clearly what it expects the student to obtain through an internship experience which cannot be provided in academic programs on campus and which enhances the academic formation of the student.

II. The Method of Screening Candidates

The nature of the selection process is to be indicated.

III. The Method of Supervision

a.  Visitation by a designated faculty member is to be arranged with regard to frequency, time and place.

b.  Supervision by an agency supervisor is to be arranged.

c.  A job description is to be determined with the company or agency in advance to assure that the student's internship experience is at the "entering professional level."

IV. Specific Academic Areas in the Internship Program

a.  There is to be a seminar or course that parallels the internship program.

b.  The student is required to complete some academic project, i.e., journal, major paper, as determined by the department.

 V. Grading of the Student's Internship Experience

a. The department, with the Dean and the Registrar, is to determine how many courses the Internship program replaces.

b. The department is to determine how many hours of work are required of  each intern.

c. The department is to indicate how the grade is computed.

PART B

The following specific requirements, adopted by the Dean, in consultation with the Curriculum Committee, apply to Internships in every department.

 I. It is the prerogative of the chairperson of the student's department to decide who will be chosen for an internship.  No student has the right to an internship.

II. A student who has achieved a grade point average of 2.0 in the major and also a 2.0 cumulative GPA at the end of five semesters is eligible for consideration for an internship.

III. Some type of academic requirement, i.e., papers, required readings, seminar work, must be submitted to the department as an integral part of the internship program.

IV. Each department will use a system of pass/fail or a letter grade as determined by the chairperson and the Dean of the College.

V. No student is permitted to take more than one internship worth four courses.  (This includes practice teaching.)
