Career Education Services is committed to helping students and alumni understand and acquire the practical skills necessary to be successful in today's competitive employment market. We stress the importance of professional preparation and marketing as the basic elements to an effective job search.
Regularly scheduled workshops include:
"Charting Your Course" - Who is responsible for your success? Maybe it's YOU! This workshop will explore the process of developing a plan for your college experience. Discussion will involve identifying resources and advising options, expectations of the "real world" and putting together a plan to successfully reach your goals.
"What Do they Want From Me Anyway?"
Come and hear the facts! What are employers and graduates schools expecting you to accomplish in four years? What is the profile of a successful graduate? This workshop will feature an employer, a graduate school admission representative and a CES advisor discussing how you can develop a marketable profile before you graduate.
"What is My Type?"
How does your personality type effect how you gather and process information, relate to people, and have success in the classroom? This workshop will use "Exploring You", a modified Myers-Briggs Type Indicator assessment to reveal your personality type. Characteristics of type will be discussed. Each participant will complete Explorng You and will leave with handouts describing their type.
"The How-Tos of Informational Interviewing"
What is informational interviewing anyway and why does everyone say that networking is the best way to get a job? If your curiosity is piqued and you want to learn the most effective way to get information on your dream jobs and how to break into them, then check this workshop out. We think you'll be happy that you did!
"Getting FOCUSed"
CES offers FOCUSII a self-assessment and informational tool that helps your to identify jobs that might match your interests and skills and offers a robust database of occupational information. This workshop will provide an overview of FOCUS II, how to use it and what it contains.
"Resume 101: Getting Started"
Have you sat in front of your computer and realized that you have no idea how to write a professional resume? How do you begin? What should you include? How should it look? What are employers and graduate schools looking for? This workshop will walk you through writing a resume and you will leave with some ideas for a rough draft tailored just for you.
"Finding A Summer Job or Internship"
Tired of the same old boring summer job? Want to find something that challenges you and permits you to get some experience for your resume? This workshop will cover strategies for identifying and contacting employers and what you will need to have before you begin. Don't enter the summer job market unprepared...you will leave this workshop with a better understanding of how to get the experience you want!
"Getting The Most Out Of Your Internship"
How do you know you are getting out of your internship the same time and effort you are putting into it? How can you market the unique skills you are learning and how can you be more competitive because of this particular internship? Come to this workshop and learn how to make the most of your practical, "real-world" experience.
"Business Etiquette and Cyberspace"
Business communication and hiring has taken full advantage of today's technology. Cell phones, text messaging, IM's, social networking sites, and video interviews are all being used to screen job applicants, arrange meetings and conduct daily transactions. What do employers expect of job seekers and what will they permit once you get on the job? This workshop will explore some basic etiquette techniques to ensure that your first impression is your best impression.
"Job Fair 101"
Have you ever been to a job fair? Do you know how to make attending one the best thing you did in helping you land your job? Come to this 30-minute workshop to get information on how to prepare before attending, successfully "work the room" and what you can do that 99% of all attendees won't to make yourself more competitive.
“Interviewing 101”
Do you think about going to your first job interview and your stomach turns? Are you afraid you'll get tongue-tied or worst yet, have no idea what to say? You are NOT alone! One of the most challenging parts of the job search is the interview. Interviewing is a SKILL and not something you are born knowing. Learn how to sell yourself in a face-to-face meeting. A mediocre resume can get you an interview but a dynamic interview will get you the job! Come to this 30 minute workshop that will tell you how to adequately prepare. We'll give you tips and techniques that will help your develop effective and successful interviewing skills.
"Using the Internet in Your Job Search"
Have you been jumping on Monster.com and either been steered toward jobs or types of companies that you are not interested in? Do you know another way to use the Internet to your advantage? Is it OK to post your resume on line? What does that entail and is it the best way to present yourself? This workshop will offer other ways to job search and how the Internet can play a major role in locating companies, particular jobs or helping your research your field.
"I Have NO Clue What to Do!"
It's CRUNCH time! This workshop will focus on those that have not prepared in advance to follow their next step or for those who are still struggling with what options to pursue.
"Tuning Up Your Resume"
Are you wondering if your resume is marketing ALL of your Skills, experiences and interests in the best possible way? Is the content of your resume finished but the end product still leaves you feeling "blah"? Is it a creative advertisement of your skills, knowledge and accomplishments? Do you have all of your information down but know you need help with how it looks or sounds? From content to formatting, this workshop will help you tailor what you already have, change the content to make a more powerful impression or put the finishing touches that can make the difference. Requirement: Participants need to have a good working draft of their resume.
“Interview SLAMS”
Are you the type of person who learns best by experience? Have you been thinking about how to get a jump start on improving your interviewing skills by enlisting the help of a friend or family member? If so, we think you’ll enjoy this SLAM (Student Learning and Mentoring) experience. In a small group setting of five students and a CES facilitator, each student will have the opportunity to practice answering questions typically asked by employers in interviews and then receive feedback from your peers. Sessions are 45 minutes long and you must reserve a spot as seating is limited. Please sign up in CES and pick up a copy of interview questions to prepare ahead for this session. We think you’ll be pleased with the results of this new offering!
"Kick Off Your Job Search"
Now is the time!!! Don't wait. Are you looking for your first professional job or summer employment? Have you narrowed down the types of jobs you want to apply for? Do you know how to find job leads, market yourself and close the deal? If not, come check this workshop out and we'll give you the tools you'll need to get up and running.
"Evaluating a Job Offer"
So you've heard the magic words… "We'd like to offer you the position". Uh oh, now what? There are many issues to consider when assessing a job offer. Will you fit well into the organization? Will the job be interesting? Is the benefit package a good one? Where can the job lead you? Is the salary fair? This workshop will help you set a personal criterion for successfully judging job offers. In addition, we will help you with your questions about how to professionally accept or reject an offer.
"Networking"
90% of all job opportunities are found through networking. This workshop will discuss the do's and don'ts of networking, how to establish contacts and how to professionally manage your "leads".
Students will role-play establishing contacts and performing follow-up.

"Marketing Your Out-of-the Classroom Experiences"
Internship, service-learning, study abroad, clubs and organizations, Spring Break Alternative, urban immersion, volunteering, athletics and work. Employers demand additional interests and skills gained from participation in extracurricular activities. Can you identify YOUR skills and market them both verbally and on a resume? This workshop will teach you how to take skills you have learned from one experience and apply them to another.
"Resume/Interviewing for Teachers"
This workshop is designed to help student teachers (and others interested in pursuing a teaching position upon graduation) with their resumes and interviewing tips. What are the "rules" for teaching resumes? How should you write up your student teaching or other teaching experiences to make you more competitive? How does an interview with a superintendent differ from one with a principal? Or the department head? We will teach you techniques, strategies and give you every pointer we know that will help you be successful in landing that teaching job.
"Senior Meetings"
Everyone does a great job at introducing you to college, but who helps you prepare for what comes after? Why CES of course! How can CES help you to make the transition from college to the next big adventure in your life? What are our services and programs, what special events do we have planned and what is our philosophy?
