You have a lovely smile, but you can keep it that way with a lot less water! The next time you are standing at the sink letting the water run, consider this: that running water is part of the 88, 137 gallons of water used on the Saint Anselm Campus every single day. That's 619,000 gallons a week, 2, 686,333 a month and over 32 million gallons a year!

Precise estimates vary, but all agree that if you let the water run while you brush your teeth, you are using enough water to fill an average-sized fish tank, up to seven gallons of water down the drain. If you do the same while you shave, you are pouring another imaginary tank of water down the drain. Many people who consider themselves zealous about environmental issues, start their day with a soothing six to ten minute hot shower that could easily be limited to 4 minutes with far fewer gallons down the drain.

This week's Green Tips:

  • Shut the water off while you are brushing.
  • Rather than running hot water while you shave, fill the sink.
  • Limit your shower to four minutes. You will be plenty clean if slightly less soothed.

If the residents living on this campus started using just 10 fewer gallons of water a day by observing the tips above, water use on campus could be reduced by 16,000 gallons a day. That's 5 to 6 million gallons a year.
