Symptoms and Facts about the A H1N1 Influenza Virus 

Symptoms include:

  • fever of 99.9 degrees or greater or chills and
  • cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

Incubation and Infectious Period 

  • The incubation period for H1N1infection is 1 to 7 days.
  • The infectious period for H1N1 is defined as 1 day prior to the onset of illness to 24 hours after the fever ends without the use of fever-reducing medications.
  • The illness has been presenting as mild flu symptoms with a fever lasting 2 to 3 days.
  • The H1N1 virus lives on surfaces for 2 to 8 hours.
  • Current data indicate the risk of infection among persons age 65 or older is less than the risk for younger age groups (as compared to seasonal influenza).
