What is H.O.W.?
The Holistic Opportunities for Well-being program helps meet the needs of students committed to living a healthy lifestyle on campus.
All involved believe in paying attention to multiple aspects of health and well-being including physical fitness, spirituality, emotional health, social and familial relationships, intellectual health, and occupational satisfaction. These dimensions of well-being, outlined by wellness expert Bill Hettler in 1979, are augmented by the addition of a seventh dimension, self-responsibility.
H.O.W. members are committed to making healthy life choices in these seven areas, and maintaining a drug and alcohol-free environment.
Members find comfort and support in the like-mindedness of their peers while friendships are quickly and easily formed. Aside from focusing on their individual and community health, H.O.W. members work to provide opportunities for well-being to the whole campus, such as the educational Wellness Fair and yoga classes.
Students interested in H.O.W. are invited to take advantage of the well-being community living arrangements provided by the Residence Life Office, or simply participate in H.O.W.'s programming efforts.
Wellness
Wellness is an integrated method of functioning, which is oriented toward maximizing the potential of which one is capable (Dr. Halbert Dunn, 1977). This model of wellness integrates seven dimensions of healthy living: occupational wellness, physical fitness and nutrition, spiritual values and ethics, emotional health, social and environmental health, intellectual wellness, and self-responsibility. Wellness involves caring for the entire person by paying equal attention to each dimension.
Housing
H.O.W. housing is available for students looking for a supportive, accepting, and friendly living environment. Likeminded students gather to encourage individual and group well-being. H.O.W. residents often benefit from exercising and working out together, supporting each other in efforts to choose a healthy diet at the cafeteria, yoga classes, maintaining an alcohol and substance-free lifestyle, retreats, studying together, and enjoying leisure time on and off campus. For information on wellness housing, please call the Office of Residence Life at (603) 641-7600.
Activities
H.O.W. works to regularly sponsor healthy events open to all students, staff, and faculty.
