Service learning combines classroom instruction with community service. Strong emphasis is placed on meeting community needs while reflecting critically on the experience and learning something of value from it.

Simply put, you go somewhere: a school, elderly housing, a nonprofit organization. You do something: tutor kids, raise funds, advocate change. You evaluate the experience: what happened, why did it happen, and how does it fit into what your learning in class. You take away experience—career or workforce training, enhanced problem solving and critical thinking skills, and a better understanding of the theories learned in class. You make a difference. Service is about helping others achieve their goals. It is about lending a helping hand with hope that you can make change.

Service learning experiences, especially those related to educational and professional goals, enhance resumes and graduate school applications—demonstrating practical experience in the field and an ethical concern for the community. At the same time there is so much more to service than making yourself look good. Service is not simply about resumes; it is about helping others. You make connections and learn things about yourself and others, you form bonds and friendships, and most importantly you help people to dream.
