President Hammond called the meeting to order at 6 p.m.
Present: Senators M. B. Cronin, D’Espinosa, Farrell, Hammond, A. Kenison, Lavoie, Lee, Lynch, Mahoney, McGhee, Norton, Romps, Spoerl and Wierda.
Absent: Senator Krantz.
I. President's Remarks
President Hammond presented an award to Prof. Dennis MacDonald in recognition of his service to the senate.
President Hammond received a memo from Father Peter, Dean of the College informing him that there are three candidates for tenure for the next academic year.
There will be a going away party for Paul Gosslin and Phil McGreevy on May 9.
Senator Krantz has informed President Hammond that she is resigning her Senate seat immediately. The vacancy will be filled by Denise Askin (the seventh highest vote getter in the preceding election). The sixth highest vote getter in next year’s election will fill the third year of Senator Krantz’s term.
II. Approval of Minutes of 10 April 2001 (part I and II)
Senator Romps (seconded by Senator Lee) moved that the minutes of the meeting of 10 April (part I and II) be approved.
The motion passed 12 in favor, 0 against and 2 abstentions.

Promotions (Arthur Kenison)–No report.
Academic Procedures (John D'Espinosa)
Summer research grants. A draft of the by-laws for the committee has been prepared. Consideration will be taken in the fall.
Academic Freedom/Faculty Welfare (Tom Lee)–No report.
Social (Ann Norton)
The faculty association had its scheduled the final party of the year.
Information Technology (Derk Wierda)–No report.
Benefits (Arthur Kenison)–No report.
Elections (Ann Norton)–No report.
Planning and Budget (John Romps, senate representative)
The committee had approved the renovation of Dominic 2.7 million; however the Monastery voted against the plan. The Monastery voted in favor of a renovation and expansion. In order to carry this out, there is a need for additional revenue.
8% less applications, 77% acceptance rate 552 students have made a deposit. 4 pts higher verbal and 8 point higher math. Total SAT almost 1100 average score.
36 given financial incentive to move off campus—30 moved to quintuple in Dominic. There will probably be less than 80 triples.
Fr. William’s family will donate money to renovate the baseball field (150K).
The College is considering a 6.5 million dollar bond issue that is tied to a guaranteed pledge to hockey rink.

Approval of senate committee assignments for next year
Senator Romps moved (seconded by Senator Lee) that the Senate approve the proposed Senate committee assignments for next year.
[The proposed list was corrected to take into account the resignation of senator Krantz]
The motion passed unanimously.
NHIOP Dedication
President Hammond pointed out that there would be an honors convocation in the fall for the dedication of the Institute of Politics. It will be required of all faculty, who are to attend in academic regalia. Senator Judd Greg is scheduled to be the speaker and he will be presented with an honorary degree. It will be held September 7, 2001.
Approval of Senate Meeting Calendar for next year
Senator Lynch moved (seconded by Senator Spoerl) that the Senate approve the proposed Senate meeting dates for next year.
The motion passed unanimously.
