A message from Abbot Matthew
This Web site introduces you to some of the fundamental principles that shape our way of life as Benedictine monks of Saint Anselm Abbey. It is a life of prayer and praise, a life in which Christ is both source and destiny. The key elements of this life, the vows of stability, conversion of life and obedience, support the monk in focusing on the Lord. These vows serve to liberate the monk from the self and lead him to encounter Christ in the other, particularly his confreres and all those whom the monastic community serves—students, colleagues, guests, parishioners, the poor and many others. Our life in the Abbey is so ordered that the monk, motivated by the Spirit, can search for God and respond to Him through the daily celebration of the Eucharist, the divine office (the choral recitation and singing of psalms and scriptural canticles), personal prayer, lectio divina (meditative spiritual reading) and work.

Every Christian is called to a life of holiness. The monastic way of life is one way to share in this call. We encourage you to join us in praying for an increase in vocations to our monastic community.
