The faculty at Saint Anselm are hard working, creative, and dedicated to their work as both scholars and teachers. In fact, Saint Anselm has often been cited for an unparalleled commitment to teaching and for placing extraordinary value on the importance of excellent teaching in a liberal arts setting.

In this campaign, we will recognize and reward the achievements of our faculty by providing financial resources that are needed to support summer research grants, regular sabbaticals, and a reduction in the current heavy course load expected of faculty. The following are some of the ways we would like to enable our faculty to build upon their outstanding work.

The College's first endowed faculty chairs will recognize the significance of particular areas of study by providing funds for salaries and research for named professorships. In addition to bringing visiting faculty to the College, endowed chairs will also enable the College to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of certain faculty already teaching at Saint Anselm. These long overdue endowed professorships will bring honor both to College and to individual faculty members. Saint Anselm currently has no endowed professorships.

Summer research grants and sabbaticals allow faculty to continue to develop professionally and to integrate their research into their teaching. In a recent academic year, our faculty delivered 71 papers at scholarly meetings and conferences and published more than 60 articles.

Reduction in the teaching load of four courses every semester is essential if Saint Anselm is to continue to attract the caliber of faculty so important for the intellectual development of our students. A four-course-per-semester teaching load is higher than that of our competitors, putting us at a disadvantage when hiring new faculty and in retaining others. Funds provided by increased endowment will enable the College to hire additional faculty and to begin to reduce teaching loads to more acceptable levels.
