When opportunity knocks, Nicole Lora '06 answers. Whether it's working one on one with homeless teens or organizing service learning projects, Nickie never misses an opportunity to make a difference. And thanks to her annual scholarship, she didn't have to.
"I really had an amazing scholarship. It allowed me to pursue my interests in community service and leadership. My parents were so excited when I got my financial aid letter, because they knew how much I wanted to come to Saint Anselm. The scholarship made that a reality."
Along with a full class schedule, this sociology major from Clarksburg Mass., served as the assistant director of the Meelia Center for Community Service, a hub of activity and goodwill. She oversaw 35 volunteer coordinators, who in turn ran programs for more than 300 student volunteers in the greater Manchester area.
Although Nickie has been involved with community service since her middle school days, her volunteer experiences at Saint Anselm have made a profound impact on her. "I know I want to work in higher education, in organizing and promoting service learning and volunteer programs. It's unbelievable to watch a student grow from a shy freshman to a volunteer to a confident leader."
"I want to look into new programs that emphasize leadership development and community partnerships. I want everybody to know that college students do make a difference."
