Commonly Asked Questions

  1. What is The Saint Anselm Fund?
In 2004, the annual fund was renamed and is now called The Saint Anselm Fund. Gifts made to the fund are generally unrestricted and are used by the college where they are needed most in supporting the college's day-to-day operations.

Academic programs, need-based scholarships, campus technology, and library resources are a few of the many areas that benefit from your gift. Top of PageTop

  2. What does a gift to The Saint Anselm Fund do?
Your gift bridges the gap between what the college receives in tuition and what it costs to educate each student. Your annual gift helps the college support vital programs on campus, provide scholarships, and participate in new initiatives as opportunities arise.

The fund provides the college with flexibility to absorb unexpected increases in costs and to make much needed improvements throughout the campus without increasing the tuition rates. Top of PageTop

  3. Why should I contribute?
In recent years, the average Saint Anselm student has graduated with more than $23,000 in student-loan debt.

Your gift to the fund helps reduce this tremendous burden by keeping increases to a minimum, by providing much-needed scholarship aid, and by supporting the budgets for many valuable programs on campus.

We invite you to take part in this important tradition, by helping the current generation of students benefit from a Saint Anselm education. Top of PageTop

  4. How important is my participation?
Your support is vital to the financial health and reputation of the college.

The participation rate of alumni who contribute to the college's annual fundraising effort is an important measure used by foundations and other grant-giving institutions in dispensing grant funding. Participation rates are also used by college ranking publications like U.S. News and World Report in compiling their "top college" lists. In both cases, the figure is used to measure how pleased alumni are with their college experience.

Participation rates are calculated by dividing the annual number of alumni contributors by the total number of living alumni. The focus is not on how much money is raised, but rather on how many alumni give gifts (of any size) to their alma mater. Each year, top-ranked schools have participation rates between 50 and 60 percent. Your continued and increased participation helps raise Saint Anselm's current rate of 29 percent, while enhancing the college's reputation and position among top-ranked institutions. Top of PageTop

  5. What are matching gifts?
Many companies match charitable donations made by employees to non-profit organizations. The matching gift can vary from a percentage of a donation, to a full dollar-for-dollar match, or a two-to-one match. Matching gifts help your contribution go further.

In most cases, the only work required for a donor to participate in a matching gift program is to complete a simple form, which is usually available through your company's human resources office.

We urge all donors to inquire as to whether their company or their spouse's company offers a matching gift program or use our Matching Gift Company Search form.  Top of PageTop

  6. How will I be contacted?
We will contact you about The Saint Anselm Fund through direct mail, through our phonathan, and by e-mail. In addition, donation envelopes for The Saint Anselm Fund are inserted in Portraits in Philanthropy, published annually.

The phonathon continues to remain one of the best ways for donors and alumni to make a pledge and to speak with current Saint Anselm students about the impact their gifts are making right now. Top of PageTop
