Saint Anselm College and long-time NHL great Hubie McDonough had his number 3 jersey retired by Saint Anselm on Saturday, February 7, 2004. The event took place between the first and second periods of the Hawk’s 10-2 win over Southern Maine which set a school record for wins in a season.

McDonough played at Saint Anselm from 1982-86 where he logged 124 career goals and 86 assists in 104 games. He is the program’s all-time points leader (210) and his 124 goals is also atop the school’s scoring charts. He holds the top two single-season goal scoring marks with 41 (1984-85) and 37 (1983-84). His 71 points in the 1984-85 campaign (41 goals, 30 assists) is the highest single season output in program history as well. He also holds the school’s single game scoring record with five markers in a game against Westfield State on December 12, 1983.

McDonough went on to play 20 seasons of professional hockey, including six seasons in the National Hockey League where he played for the New York Islanders (1989-92), the Los Angeles Kings (1988-90), and the San Jose Sharks (1992-93). He scored 373 professional goals and 473 assists, including 40 goals and 26 assists at the NHL level. His best season in the NHL came with the Islanders in 1989-90. McDonough played 54 regular season games, scoring 18 goals with 11 assists. He also logged a playoff goal that season.

The retiring of his jersey marked the first time that a Saint Anselm player in any sport has had his/her jersey retired by the College. The timing could not be better as the Hawks have settled into their new home, Thomas Sullivan Arena, located on the campus of the 2,000 student school.
