Manchester, N.H. (January 5) -- The Saint Anselm Hawks and the Bowdoin Polar Bears both picked up wins on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Arena. The Polar Bears held off a valiant effort from No. 7 Manhattanville, 3-2 in the noon-time game, while the Hawks defeated Williams, 5-0, in the 3 p.m. game.
Saint Anselm vs. WilliamsThe Hawks defeated Williams, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Arena to keep their winning streak alive. The Hawks now ride a nine-game winning streak to open the season, staying perfect at 9-0-0, while the Ephs drop to 1-7-0.
Bianca DeSantis (Georgetown, Mass.) scored her third goal of the season off a rebound in front of the net at the 8:43 mark into the first period. Arianna Rigano (Malden, Mass.) assisted on the goal. The Hawks took the 1-0 lead into the second period.
After a scoreless second period, the Hawks opened up the third period with three goals in less than two minutes. Kathleen Twomey's (Londonderry, N.H.) one-timer found the back of the net off a Sam Rowe (Chelmsford, Mass.) feed just 26 seconds into the third period. DeSantis lit up the scoreboard again to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead at the 1:14 mark, while Alexa Hingston (Charlestown, Mass.) found the back of the net for her first goal of the season, assisted by Daniella Lyons (Greene, Maine) at the 1:43 mark. The Hawks made the score 5-0 when Rigano scored a short-handed goal at the 4:01 mark.
Andrea Berlin (Durham, N.H.) and Carley Berry (Danvers, Mass.) combined for the shutout in net for the Hawks.
The Hawks return to ECAC East play on Wednesday, January 9th, hosting UMass Boston at 7 p.m. at Sullivan Arena. The Ephs return to NESCAC play on Friday, January 11th, hosting Colby at 7 p.m.
No. 7 Manhattanville vs. BowdoinThe Bowdoin Polar Bears held off a valiant effort from Manhattanville, 3-2. Bowdoin used three different scores to obtain the win. The win improves the Polar Bears to 2-4-1, while the loss drops the Valiants to 7-3-0.
After a penalty-ridden first period, the Polar Bears got on the board first, as Michaela Calnan (Melrose, Mass.) scored off a rebound at the 7:06 mark in the second period. Julia King (Yarmouth, Maine) and Sam Stewart (Lake Oswego, Ore.) assisted on the goal.
After a Manhattanville goal was called off at the 16:25 mark for the net being off the moorings, Bowdoin struck again seconds later. Caroline Currie (Hanover, N.H.) found open ice and beat Manhattanville goaltender, Sophia Kokkonis (East Meadow, N.Y.), at the 16:09 mark. Bowdoin took the 2-0 lead into the third period.
Manhattanville cut the lead in half when Natalie Zitek (Charlestown, W.V.) scored on the power play at the 7:08 mark in the third period, assisted by Danielle Nagymarosi (Uxbridge, Ontario) and Shannon Coffey (Malden, Mass.). The score remained 2-1 until the Polar Bears posted an insurance goal at the 18:05 mark. Alex Ysasi (Phoenix, Ariz.) scored from the point, assisted by Lindsay McNamara (Milton, Mass.).
The Valiants pulled their goalie with 1:22 remaining to give them an extra skater and capitalized just eight seconds later to cut the lead to 3-2. Nagymarosi found the back of the net, assisted by Jess Zimmerman (Wauseon, Ohio) and Danielle Mazurek (Eaglesham, Alberta). The Valiants did not net the equalizer despite outshooting the Polar Bears 21-5 in the third period, as the Polar Bears earned their second win of the season.
Bowdoin goaltender, Kelly Keebler (Norristown, Pa.), made 28 saves in the victory, while Kokkonis made 21 saves in the loss.
Bowdoin returns to NESCAC play next weekend, playing at Middlebury at 7 p.m. on January 11th. Manhattanville returns to ECAC East action on January 11th, hosting Castleton at 7:30 p.m.
